Windows to Nowhere: Why I’ve Ditched Windows for Linux
Welcome to my blog!
This is my very first post, and I can’t think of a better way to kick things off than by sharing a journey that has fundamentally reshaped my computing experience: my transition from Windows to Linux, and why I have absolutely no intention of ever going back.
Growing up, the computing landscape felt fairly binary. If you weren’t aiming for a “Mac,” then Windows was the ubiquitous operating system pre-installed on virtually every laptop and PC you’d find at mainstream retailers. Over time, however, I’ve come to recognize that Windows is far from perfect. In fact, its shortcomings became apparent to me sooner rather than later. I find Windows incredibly frustrating because it feels like it’s constantly trying to get me to spend money. It seems there’s always a prompt to pay for an update, an upgrade, a subscription, or additional software. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been bombarded with pop-up notifications trying to up-sell me on antivirus programs or other paid services. When compared to Linux, which is free and open-source, Windows often feels like a constant money pit. And let’s not forget the relentless stream of pop-up notifications. These aren’t just occasional reminders; they often feel like intrusive distractions, pulling me away from whatever I’m actually trying to accomplish. Another common grievance with Windows is its tendency to slow down over time. As the operating system ages, it can become sluggish and unresponsive – a truly frustrating experience for anyone expecting a smooth and efficient computing experience. Linux, on the other hand, has been an enormous difference for me.
Here are just a few reasons why I love Linux:
•Free and Open Source: Linux is Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). This means you can use it without paying a single penny. Even better, you have the freedom to modify and distribute it as you see fit. This unparalleled level of freedom is something Windows simply cannot offer.
•No Unwanted Pop-Ups: Linux doesn’t bombard you with pop-ups and unsolicited notifications. It provides a cleaner, more streamlined experience that allows you to truly focus on your tasks. No constant prompts to upgrade or pay for a subscription – just pure, uninterrupted productivity.
•Performance: In my experience, Linux simply doesn’t degrade in performance over time the way Windows often does. It runs smoothly and efficiently, even on older or less powerful hardware.
•Learning and Customization: Embracing Linux has been a fantastic catalyst for my learning. It’s encouraged me to delve deeper into programming and system administration, offering a powerful platform for anyone curious about how their computer truly operates. Plus, it’s incredibly customizable, making it the perfect choice for users who want to tailor their operating system precisely to their needs.
•Powerful Free Software for Creatives: If you’re into digital photography and art like I am, there’s no need to fork out a fortune for expensive software like Adobe Photoshop. On Linux, you have access to incredible FOSS programs such as Krita, GIMP, Darktable, RawTherapee, and DigiKam. These tools allow you to edit, manage your photos, manipulate your art, and handle graphic design with remarkable capability. There are so many fantastic free options available on Linux!
Currently, I’m running Fedora 43, and on my second laptop, I’ve got Ubuntu installed. I genuinely don’t see myself going back to Windows anytime soon – or honestly, ever! Now, I’ll admit, my journey into Linux wasn’t entirely without its bumps. My first attempt to install Kali on one of my laptops ended up completely wiping out the drive I was using for the installation! But that was entirely my own mistake – a classic case of not paying close enough attention. It was a valuable learning experience, though, and a story for another time. Ultimately, Windows is a decent choice for those who prefer an “easy” out-of-the-box experience and don’t mind the ongoing costs of subscriptions and programs. However, for anyone seeking more control, a cleaner interface, and a system that consistently maintains its performance over time, Linux is undeniably the superior path.
