No backyard? No problem! How I Built a Bird Paradise from My Apartment Patio Hummingbird

Another Anna’s Hummingbird Home Invasion

,

I found myself in the unexpected company of a female Anna’s Hummingbird.

This enchanting Hummingbird ventured into my home a few days ago- in what seemed like a frenzy.

This is probably the 3rd one this year that has blessed me with an in-home visit. Unlike her male counterpart with his vibrant iridescence, this one was a demure female, adorned in muted tones and delicate feathers.

She seemed drawn to the ceiling, repeatedly darting upwards as if entranced by an unseen force and finally perched on my ceiling fan (as shown above).

What made this encounter particularly challenging was that she did not flee towards the window but instead remained inside my apartment for a considerable amount of time.

The late afternoon light gradually dimmed as dusk approached, adding tension and urgency to my efforts to release her safely without causing harm. To keep her calm and hydrated while attempting to guide her out, I offered her nectar. I placed the nectar on my ceiling fan next to where she was perched:

My heart raced with each attempt to guide her towards freedom; I knew I had to act before nightfall descended upon us. Time was running out, and I wanted nothing more than to see this tiny creature safely back in the embrace of nature where she belonged.

In order to free the hummingbird from my home, I had to create an escape route for her using a screen on one of the windows. as a means to gently guide her out of my window. This step was crucial not only for her safety but also to respect her delicate nature and freedom as a wild creature.

It had been an arduous task, but ultimately a rewarding one – for both the hummingbird and myself. Through patience and careful observation, I was able to successfully guide the hummingbird outside before the sun completely set.
As she took flight, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment mixed with awe at the sheer resilience of this tiny creature. I know how exhausting this whole ordeal for the tiny bird must have been.

Living in such close proximity with animals has taught me how vital it is for us to respect nature, especially when we’re living side by side in populated areas. It really highlights just how interconnected everything is – a beautiful reminder of this complex dance between our homes and the wildlife that surrounds us.

In these moments when creatures like the Anna’s Hummingbird choose to grace our homes with their presence, it becomes even more important that we take steps to ensure their safety and well-being. Whether through creating bird-friendly spaces in gardens or simply being mindful of how we interact with wildlife, every action counts.
